Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive Paro · Rinpung Dzong and Kyichu Lhakhang — Fly into Paro and collect your Entry Permit at the airport. Your guide meets you and takes you to the hotel, about 15 minutes away. Paro is at about 2,200 m, so take it easy on the first day. In the afternoon, visit Rinpung Dzong above the river and Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan. In the evening, your trekking guide gives a briefing and checks your gear.
Hike to Tiger's Nest · Acclimatisation day — Drive about 20 minutes to the trailhead and hike up to Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) Monastery, perched on a cliff at about 3,100 m. The climb takes 2.5–3 hours on a wide dirt path, followed by about 700 steps down and up to the monastery itself; the round trip takes 5–6 hours. This is the ideal warm-up for the trek, because it takes you to the height of the first camp and back down to sleep. Rest in…
Trek day 1: Paro to Jili Dzong (about 3,450 m) — Drive to the trailhead near the National Museum (Ta Dzong) above Paro. The first day is a steady climb of about 7–8 km and 1,000 m of height gain, taking 4–5 hours, through blue pine and fir forest and past a few farmhouses to the ridge. Camp is set up below the old Jili Dzong, a small fortress-temple with a few resident monks, with views down to the Paro valley. The camp crew and pack ponies…
Trek day 2: Jili Dzong to Jimilang Tsho (about 3,880 m) — Walk about 11 km (5–6 hours) along and just below the ridge through rhododendron forest and open yak pastures, passing the herders' camp at Jangchulakha. On clear days, Jomolhari (7,326 m) and other peaks of the Himalaya appear to the north. Camp beside Jimilang Tsho, a lake known for its large trout and for local legends. Nights here are cold, often below freezing in spring and autumn.
Trek day 3: Jimilang Tsho to Simkota (about 4,110 m) — A shorter day of about 11 km (4–5 hours) through dwarf rhododendron and high pasture, passing Janetso lake and yak herders' tents. Camp beside Simkota lake, the highest camp on the trek. Take the afternoon slowly, drink plenty of water and wrap up warm, because temperatures drop quickly after sunset.
Trek day 4: Simkota to Thimphu via Phajoding · Thimphu sightseeing — Climb gently to the highest point of the trek, a pass of about 4,200 m with prayer flags and, on clear days, a view of Gangkar Puensum, then descend steeply through forest past Phajoding Monastery to the edge of Thimphu (about 10–12 km, 5–6 hours, mostly downhill and hard on the knees). Your vehicle meets you at the trail end. After a hot shower at the hotel, visit Buddha Dordenma or the…
Thimphu to Paro airport · Departure — After breakfast, drive to Paro International Airport (about 55 km, 1.5 hours), reaching at least 2 hours before your flight. For an afternoon flight, there may be time to stop at Tachog Lhakhang and its iron-chain bridge on the way. Paro flights operate only in daylight and can be delayed by weather, so avoid tight onward connections in India.

Good to know
The Druk Path is a moderate trek: about 50 km over 4 days, with 4–6 hours of walking a day and camps at up to about 4,100 m. You should be able to walk comfortably for 5–6 hours on hill trails. Train with long walks and stair climbing for at least 6 weeks.
Altitude: walk slowly, drink 3 litres of water a day, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or breathlessness. Consult your doctor before the trip, especially if you have heart, lung or blood pressure problems.
Nights in camp are cold (often −5 to 5°C in spring and autumn). Bring a sleeping bag rated to about −10°C, a down jacket, thermal layers, a woollen cap, gloves, a head torch and good broken-in trekking boots.
Camps have dining and toilet tents but no showers or electricity. Carry a power bank, wet wipes and hand sanitiser.
Dress code for dzongs and temples: full-sleeved shirts with collars, long trousers, no caps. Photography is not allowed inside temples.
Vegetarian food is no problem on trek; the camp cook prepares rice, dal, vegetables and noodles. Tell us in advance about any dietary needs.
Questions travellers ask
How difficult is the Druk Path trek?
It is a moderate trek. The first day is a steep climb, and the last day is a long descent. Most reasonably fit adults who prepare with regular walking manage it well. No climbing skills are needed.
Who carries the tents and luggage?
Pack ponies and the camp crew carry the tents, kitchen and your main bag. You carry a small day pack with water, snacks, a jacket and a camera.
Is the SDF charged for nights on the trek?
Yes. Bhutan charges the SDF for every night you spend in the country, including camping nights: ₹1,200 per person per night for Indian adults, so ₹7,200 for this trip. It is not included in the package price.
What about vegetarian food at camp?
The cook prepares fresh vegetarian meals such as rice, dal, vegetable curries, noodles and soups, along with tea and biscuits. Bhutanese cooks can make Indian-style food if you ask.
Are flights included?
No. Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly to Paro from Delhi, Kolkata, Bagdogra and other Indian cities. We can quote flights separately.
