Visa & entry
Indian passport holders need a Georgian e-visa, applied for online at the official site evisa.gov.ge, unless they hold a valid (unexpired) visa or residence permit from the USA, UK, a Schengen country or certain other countries, in which case they can enter without a Georgian visa for up to 90 days in any 180. The e-visa allows up to 30 days and costs about USD 35 in total, including the consular fee, service fee and an online identity check; processing usually takes 5–7 working days, so apply at least 2 weeks before travel. There is no visa on arrival for Indians. From 1 January 2026, every foreign visitor must carry health and accident insurance valid in Georgia for the whole stay, with cover of at least 30,000 GEL (about USD 11,000), in English or Georgian; border officers can refuse entry without it. Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months from arrival.
Good to know
Georgia uses the lari (GEL). Cards are widely accepted in Tbilisi; carry cash for markets, Sighnaghi and small wineries. ATMs are common in towns.
Tbilisi has many Indian restaurants, including vegetarian ones. Georgian food also suits vegetarians: khachapuri (cheese bread), lobio (bean stew), pkhali (vegetable and walnut pâté) and badrijani (aubergine rolls).
Women should carry a headscarf and men should avoid shorts when visiting churches; many churches lend wraps at the door.
Old Tbilisi is hilly with cobbled lanes. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip.
Wine tastings usually include 3–5 small pours. Fresh grape juice, churchkhela and tea are offered if you do not drink alcohol.
Georgian time is 1 hour 30 minutes behind Indian time.
Questions travellers ask
Do Indians need a visa for Georgia?
Yes, usually an e-visa applied for online, costing about USD 35 and taking about 5–7 working days. If you hold a valid US, UK or Schengen visa or residence permit, you can enter without a Georgian visa. Travel insurance is now compulsory for entry.
Is vegetarian food available?
Yes. Tbilisi has several Indian restaurants, and Georgian cuisine has many vegetarian dishes such as cheese breads, bean stew and vegetable-walnut salads. Breakfasts include eggs, bread, cheese and fruit.
We don't drink alcohol. Is the winery visit still worth it?
Yes. You see the qvevri cellar and learn how Georgians have made wine for 8,000 years, and the hosts offer grape juice, churchkhela and fruit instead of wine.
Are flights included?
No. Flights are quoted separately. IndiGo has operated direct flights from Delhi to Tbilisi, and there are one-stop options via Dubai, Sharjah, Doha and Istanbul.
Is this trip suitable for elderly parents and small children?
Yes. Drives are 2 hours or less, and we use a private vehicle. Old Tbilisi and Sighnaghi have slopes and cobbled lanes, so seniors may want to skip a few steep sections.
