Visa & entry
Indian passport holders need a Georgian e-visa, applied for online at the official site evisa.gov.ge, unless they hold a valid (unexpired) visa or residence permit from the USA, UK, a Schengen country or certain other countries, in which case they can enter without a Georgian visa for up to 90 days in any 180. The e-visa allows up to 30 days and costs about USD 35 in total, including the consular fee, service fee and an online identity check; processing usually takes 5–7 working days, so apply at least 2 weeks before travel. There is no visa on arrival for Indians. From 1 January 2026, every foreign visitor must carry health and accident insurance valid in Georgia for the whole stay, with cover of at least 30,000 GEL (about USD 11,000), in English or Georgian; border officers can refuse entry without it. Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months from arrival.
Good to know
Stepantsminda is at about 1,750 m and Gergeti at 2,170 m. Even in summer, mornings and evenings are 5–12°C, so pack a warm jacket. In winter, temperatures fall well below 0°C.
In winter the Jvari Pass can close after heavy snow, sometimes for a day or more. If that happens, we adjust the plan (for example, staying in Gudauri), and extra costs are payable locally.
The road to Kazbegi has hairpin bends. Carry motion-sickness tablets if needed.
Kazbegi is a small village with simple restaurants. Vegetarian Georgian dishes such as khachapuri, lobio (bean stew) and mushroom dishes are easy to order; Tbilisi has many Indian restaurants.
Georgia uses the lari (GEL). Carry cash for the mountains, where some cafés and 4x4 drivers do not take cards.
Churches require modest dress: women should cover their heads and wear skirts; men should not wear shorts.
Questions travellers ask
Will we see snow in Kazbegi?
From about November to April there is snow in Kazbegi and Gudauri. In summer, Mount Kazbek's peak and glaciers stay white, but the valleys are green.
Is the drive to Kazbegi safe?
Yes, the highway is paved and used daily, with experienced local drivers. In winter it can close for a while after heavy snow, so we keep the plan flexible.
Do Indians need a visa for Georgia?
Yes, usually an e-visa applied for online, about USD 35, taking 5–7 working days. Holders of a valid US, UK or Schengen visa or residence permit can enter without one. Travel insurance is compulsory for entry.
Is this trip suitable for elderly parents and children?
Yes. The 4x4 ride to Gergeti avoids the steep climb, and most other walks are short. People with heart or breathing problems should note that Kazbegi is at about 1,750–2,170 m.
Is vegetarian food available in the mountains?
Yes. Cheese bread, bean stew, potatoes, salads and mushroom dishes are available everywhere. Carry some Indian snacks for the Kazbegi nights if you prefer familiar food.
