Highlights

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Arrive Tbilisi · First taste of Georgian food — Our driver meets you at Tbilisi International Airport and takes you to your hotel, about 25–30 minutes; a welcome drink is served on arrival. Many flights from India land early in the morning, so early check-in may cost extra; otherwise check-in is from 2:00 pm. In the evening, walk through the old town past the sulphur-bath domes and try your first Georgian dishes: badrijani (aubergine rolls…
  2. Tbilisi food walk · Dezerter Bazaar · Clay-oven bakeries — After breakfast, a guided food walk of about 4 hours. Start at the Dezerter Bazaar, the city's main market, to taste sulguni and imeruli cheeses, adjika and svanetian salt, pickles and churchkhela (walnuts dipped in thickened grape juice). Visit an old-town bakery where shotis puri bread is slapped onto the walls of a round clay oven, then ride the cable car to Narikala fortress (fare paid…

Stop at Telavi's market for fruit, honey and spices, then visit a family winery to see the qvevri cellar, where grapes ferment with their skins in clay jars buried in the ground, and taste 4–5 wines with bread and cheese. Fresh grape juice is offered to non-drinkers. Check in at…

Cooking class: khachapuri and khinkali · Sighnaghi — After breakfast, join a hands-on cooking class of about 3 hours with a local family: knead dough and bake khachapuri cheese bread, fold and pleat khinkali dumplings (with mushroom, potato or cheese fillings for vegetarians), and make a fresh tomato-cucumber salad with walnuts. In autumn you may also help make churchkhela. You eat what you cook for lunch. In the afternoon, drive about 1 hour to…
  5. Alaverdi Cathedral · Back to Tbilisi — After breakfast and check-out, visit Alaverdi Cathedral, an 11th-century church among vineyards where the monks still make wine. Optional at extra cost: the Khareba wine tunnel at Kvareli, cut into the mountainside, or the Tsinandali Estate and its old wine cellar. Return to Tbilisi, about 2–2.5 hours, and check in. The evening is free; Tbilisi has many Indian restaurants if you want a break…
  6. Mtskheta · Last evening in Tbilisi — After breakfast, drive about 30 minutes to Mtskheta, Georgia's ancient capital, to see Jvari Monastery above the meeting of two rivers and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (UNESCO). Stalls near the cathedral sell churchkhela, local honey and homemade wine. Return to Tbilisi in the afternoon to shop for spices, tkemali (sour plum sauce) and wine to take home. In the evening, a farewell dinner; a…
