Good to know
The Rohtang permit is issued online, a few days ahead, in limited numbers, and the pass is closed on Tuesdays. Plan Day 4 so it does not fall on a Tuesday. If Rohtang is not possible, the trip goes to Atal Tunnel and Sissu.
The car's AC is usually switched off on steep hill climbs to protect the engine. This is normal practice in Himachal.
Day 3 and Day 6 are long road days of 7–9 hours on winding roads. Carry motion-sickness tablets if anyone in your group needs them.
Shimla and Manali are cold from November to February, and Rohtang or Sissu is cold even in summer. Pack warm layers, gloves and good walking shoes.
In July and August, monsoon landslides can block the Kiratpur–Manali highway for hours. Paragliding and rafting are also stopped in the monsoon.
Mobile signal is good in Shimla and Manali but weak at Rohtang and in Lahaul. Carry some cash for ponies, rides and small shops.
Questions travellers ask
Can the tour start from Delhi instead of Chandigarh?
Yes. Most guests take an overnight Volvo bus, a morning train such as the Shatabdi, or a short flight to Chandigarh. A Delhi pickup by car adds about 5–6 hours of driving each way, which we can quote separately.
Is Rohtang Pass guaranteed?
No. Rohtang depends on the online permit quota, the Tuesday closure and snow on the road. If it is not possible, we go to Atal Tunnel and Sissu instead, which have similar high-mountain scenery and snow in season.
Will we see snow?
From December to February, there is usually snow at Kufri, Solang and Sissu. From May to June, you will usually find snow higher up at Rohtang. From mid-September to November, the higher peaks have snow, but the valleys are mostly clear.
Are paragliding and other activities included?
No. Paragliding, ropeways, rafting and pony rides are optional and paid on the spot. Our driver can point you to the authorised counters.
Is vegetarian and South Indian food available?
Yes. Shimla and Manali have plenty of vegetarian restaurants, and several serve South Indian dishes such as dosa and idli.
