In the afternoon, visit Fort Kochi: the Chinese fishing nets, St. Francis Church, Santa Cruz Basilica and the antique shops of Jew Town (Mattancherry Palace and the synagogue have their own timings and closing days). In the evening, attend the included Kathakali…
Kochi to Munnar · waterfalls and tea estates — After breakfast, drive to Munnar (about 130 km, 4–4.5 hours) through the Western Ghats, stopping at the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, which are fullest after the monsoon. The last stretch climbs through tea estates and cardamom gardens. Check in and spend the evening at leisure; Munnar evenings are cool, so keep a light jacket handy.
Munnar sightseeing · Tea Museum and Mattupetty — A full day in Munnar with your vehicle. In the morning, visit Eravikulam National Park (Rajamalai) to see the Nilgiri tahr; the park usually closes for the calving season around February–March, and entry and park bus tickets are paid on the spot. Next, visit the Tea Museum, included in your package, to see how tea is processed from leaf to packet. In the afternoon, drive to Mattupetty Dam, Echo…
Munnar to Thekkady · spice plantation and Ayurveda — After breakfast, drive to Thekkady (about 90–110 km, 3.5–4 hours) through cardamom hill country. In the afternoon, take the included guided walk through a spice plantation to see pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg growing, followed by the included Ayurvedic welcome massage. Thekkady to Alleppey · houseboat on the backwaters — If you wish, take an early Periyar lake boat ride (optional; the first boat leaves around 7:30 am, tickets are limited and paid separately). Then drive to Alleppey (about 140 km, 4 hours) and board your private houseboat around noon. Lunch is served on board as the boat cruises through palm-lined canals, paddy fields and villages towards Vembanad Lake. Houseboats stop cruising and anchor around…
Alleppey to Kovalam · evening at Lighthouse Beach — Breakfast on board, then check out of the houseboat at about 9 am. Swim only in the flagged areas watched by lifeguards.
Thiruvananthapuram · Padmanabhaswamy Temple · beach afternoon — In the morning, drive about 30 minutes to Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) for darshan at Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. Good to know
Munnar is cool all year (often 12–20 °C in winter), so pack a light jacket. The coast, the backwaters and Kovalam are warm and humid.
The hill roads to Munnar and Thekkady are winding. Carry motion-sickness tablets if anyone in your family needs them.
Eravikulam National Park usually closes for some weeks around February–March for the Nilgiri tahr calving season. Periyar boat tickets are limited, so book as soon as your dates are fixed.
Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple admits Hindus only, with a strict dress code; mundus can be hired near the gate. Phones and cameras must be left at the cloakroom.
The sea at Kovalam can be rough, especially from May to August. Swim only between the lifeguard flags.
The houseboat chef can cook vegetarian or mild Andhra-style food if you tell us in advance. UPI and cards work widely; carry some cash for entry tickets and tips.
Questions travellers ask
Can we get vegetarian or Telugu-style food?
Yes. Hotels serve North and South Indian vegetarian food, Trivandrum has many vegetarian restaurants, and the houseboat cook will make vegetarian meals with the spice level you prefer if you tell us when booking.
Is this trip suitable for elderly parents?
Yes. Travel is by private car with little walking, and the itinerary moves at a steady pace. The longest drives are 4–4.5 hours, with breaks on the way.
Why does the trip end in Trivandrum and not Kochi?
Kovalam is about 30 minutes from Trivandrum airport, so ending there saves you a 5-hour drive back to Kochi. Book your return flight from Trivandrum (TRV).
Is the houseboat private?
Yes. It is a private houseboat for your group with its own crew. The number of bedrooms depends on how many of you are travelling.
Does the price include flights?
No. The package starts at Kochi and ends at Trivandrum. We can book flights from Vijayawada or Hyderabad separately and send you a combined quote.
