A 5-day private trip to Kerala's hill country, starting and ending at Kochi airport. You spend two nights in Munnar for the tea estates, the Tea Museum and Eravikulam National Park, then two nights in Thekkady on the edge of Periyar Tiger Reserve, with a full day for a lake boat ride and a guided walk or bamboo rafting in the reserve. Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive Cochin · drive to Munnar — Our driver meets you at Cochin International Airport and drives you to Munnar (about 110 km, 4–4.5 hours) through the Western Ghats, with stops at the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls. The last stretch climbs through tea estates and cardamom gardens. Check in and spend the evening at leisure; Munnar evenings are cool, so keep a light jacket handy.
Eravikulam National Park · Tea Museum · Mattupetty — Start early for Eravikulam National Park (Rajamalai), about 15 km from town, where a park bus takes you up to see the Nilgiri tahr, a mountain goat found only in the Western Ghats. Entry and bus tickets are paid on the spot or booked online, and the park usually closes around February–March for the calving season. Munnar to Thekkady · spice plantation · Kathakali — After breakfast, drive to Thekkady (about 90–110 km, 3.5–4 hours) through cardamom hill country. In the afternoon, take the included guided walk through a spice plantation to see pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg growing, followed by the included Ayurvedic welcome massage. In the evening, watch the included Kathakali performance at a cultural centre in Kumily (about 1 hour).
Periyar Tiger Reserve · lake boat ride and nature walk — A full day for Periyar. Take the early boat ride on Periyar lake (optional; the first boat leaves around 7:30 am, takes about 1.5 hours, and tickets are limited and paid separately), when elephants, gaur, sambar deer and birds are most often seen at the water's edge; tiger sightings are rare. Departure from Kochi airport — After an early breakfast, drive to Cochin International Airport (about 150 km, 4.5–5 hours) for your flight home; book a flight leaving after about 3 pm. If you prefer a shorter drive, Madurai airport is about 140 km (3.5–4 hours) away, and we can drop you there instead on request.

Visa & entry
No visa needed. Carry a government photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or voter ID) for every traveller, because hotels ask for it at check-in and Periyar's boat and eco-tourism counters may ask for it when booking.
Good to know
Munnar and Thekkady are cool in the mornings and evenings (often 12–20 °C in winter). Pack a light jacket and comfortable walking shoes.
Eravikulam usually closes for some weeks around February–March for the Nilgiri tahr calving season. Book its tickets online in peak season to avoid long queues.
Periyar boat tickets are limited and sell out early on weekends and holidays. The nature walk and bamboo rafting have small group sizes, so book them as soon as your dates are fixed.
Wear dull green or brown clothes for the walks in the reserve, keep quiet, and carry leech socks in the wet months.
The hill roads are winding. Carry motion-sickness tablets if needed.
Kumily's spice shops sell cardamom, pepper, tea and Ayurvedic oils; buy from shops that give a proper bill.
Questions travellers ask
Will we see a tiger at Periyar?
Tiger sightings are rare, because the forest is dense. On the boat ride and walks you are more likely to see elephants, gaur (Indian bison), sambar deer, wild boar, otters and many birds.
Is the Periyar boat ride included?
No. The boat ride and the reserve's walks and rafting are optional and paid separately. Tickets are limited, so tell us early and we will help you book.
Is this trip suitable for elderly parents and children?
Yes. The sightseeing is mostly by private car. The bamboo rafting trek is a full day of walking and is better for fit adults; seniors and young children can do the lake boat ride and the spice plantation instead.
Can we get vegetarian food?
Yes. Hotels in Munnar and Thekkady serve North and South Indian vegetarian food, and Kumily has several vegetarian restaurants.
Does the price include flights?
No. The package starts and ends at Kochi airport (Madurai drop on request). We can book flights from Vijayawada or Hyderabad separately and send you a combined quote.
