A 14-day guided trek from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) and the Kala Patthar viewpoint (about 5,644 m), staying in teahouse lodges along the way. Highlights

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Arrive Kathmandu · Trek briefing — Our representative meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport and drives you to your hotel. In the afternoon, your trekking guide meets you for a briefing and a kit check; any missing gear such as a down jacket or sleeping bag can be hired or bought cheaply in Thamel. If time allows, visit Pashupatinath Temple and Boudhanath Stupa, both close to the airport. Sleep early, because the Lukla…
  2. Fly to Lukla (2,860 m) · Trek to Phakding (2,610 m) — Take the early-morning flight to Lukla, about 30 minutes. In the busy seasons (about April–May and October–November), Lukla flights usually leave from Ramechhap (Manthali) airport instead, which means leaving Kathmandu around 2–3 am for a 4–5 hour drive. From Lukla, the first day on foot is gentle: about 3–4 hours, mostly downhill along the Dudh Kosi river, past prayer wheels and mani stones, to…
  3. Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) — A long, tough day of about 6–7 hours. The trail crosses the river several times on high suspension bridges and enters Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo, where permits are checked. After the famous Hillary Bridge, a steep climb of about 2 hours leads up to Namche Bazaar; on a clear day you get your first glimpse of Everest on the way. Walk slowly and drink plenty of water.
  4. Acclimatisation day in Namche Bazaar — A rest day to help your body adjust to the altitude, following the rule 'climb high, sleep low'. In the morning, hike up for 2–3 hours to the area around the Everest View Hotel (about 3,880 m) or Syangboche for views of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam, then come back down to Namche. In the afternoon, visit the Sherpa museum, the bakeries and the gear shops of Namche.
  5. Namche to Tengboche (3,867 m) — A beautiful walk of about 5–6 hours. The trail contours high above the valley with views of Ama Dablam and Everest, drops to the river at Phunki Tenga, then climbs steeply for about 2 hours through rhododendron forest to Tengboche. The monastery here is the largest in the Khumbu; if you arrive in time, you can sit in on the afternoon prayers (usually around 3 pm).
  6. Tengboche to Dingboche (4,410 m) — Walk about 5–6 hours, descending through forest to Deboche, crossing the Imja Khola and passing the village of Pangboche with its old monastery. The trees thin out as you climb past 4,000 m into open alpine country, with Ama Dablam very close. Dingboche is a village of stone-walled fields in a wide valley. From here on, nights are well below freezing for much of the year.
  7. Acclimatisation day in Dingboche · Nangkartshang hike — The second rest day, which is important before going above 4,900 m. In the morning, hike slowly up Nangkartshang Peak behind the village (to about 5,000 m, 3–4 hours up and down) for views of Makalu, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Island Peak. Return to Dingboche for lunch and rest in the afternoon. Your guide will check how each trekker is feeling and their oxygen levels before moving higher.
  8. Dingboche to Lobuche (4,940 m) — Walk about 5–6 hours. The trail climbs gently along a wide valley to Thukla, then steeply up the Thukla Pass, where stone memorials remember climbers who died on Everest. It then follows the edge of the Khumbu Glacier's moraine to the small settlement of Lobuche. The air is thin here, so take it slowly and keep drinking water.
  9. Lobuche to Gorak Shep (5,164 m) · Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) — The big day. Walk about 3 hours over rocky moraine to Gorak Shep, drop your bags at the lodge and have an early lunch. Then walk about 2–3 hours each way along the Khumbu Glacier to Everest Base Camp, marked by prayer flags and a large rock, with the Khumbu Icefall above; in spring, the expedition tents are pitched nearby. Return to Gorak Shep by late afternoon. In total, expect 8–9 hours on…
  10. Kala Patthar sunrise (about 5,644 m) · Descend to Pheriche (4,371 m) — Start before dawn, around 4:30 am, and climb Kala Patthar (about 2 hours up a steep, sandy trail) for sunrise on Everest, Nuptse, Changtse and Pumori; this is the closest and best view of Everest's summit on the trek. It is very cold at that hour, often −10 to −15°C. Return to Gorak Shep for breakfast, then descend about 5–6 hours via Lobuche and Thukla to Pheriche, where the lower altitude…
  11. Pheriche to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) — A long day of about 6–7 hours, mostly downhill, retracing the route via Pangboche and Tengboche, with a climb of about 1–1.5 hours from Phunki Tenga back up to the ridge above Namche. Back in Namche, enjoy a hot shower and a meal at one of the bakeries.
  12. Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,860 m) — The last trekking day, about 6–7 hours. Descend steeply to the Hillary Bridge, then follow the Dudh Kosi back through Monjo and Phakding, with a final climb of about 1 hour up to Lukla. In the evening, celebrate the end of the trek with your guide. Your guide reconfirms the next morning's flight.
  13. Fly Lukla to Kathmandu · Rest day — Take the early-morning flight back to Kathmandu, or to Ramechhap followed by a 4–5 hour drive in the busy seasons. Lukla flights depend on the weather and can be delayed by hours or days, which is why this day is kept free. Check in at your Kathmandu hotel, rest, and if time allows, shop in Thamel or visit Swayambhunath.
  14. Departure from Kathmandu — Breakfast and check-out. Transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport, about 20–30 minutes away, reaching 3 hours before your international flight. We strongly suggest booking a changeable return ticket, or adding a spare day, in case Lukla flights are delayed.

Inclusions

Exclusions

Visa & entry

No visa needed. Indian citizens enter Nepal with a valid Indian passport or a Voter ID card issued by the Election Commission of India, and airlines accept either for flights to Kathmandu. Aadhaar and PAN cards are not accepted as travel documents for adults. For the trekking permits, carry your original ID, a photocopy and two passport-size photos. We recommend a passport for this trip, because it is the simplest document at every checkpoint.

Good to know

Questions travellers ask

How fit do we need to be?

You should be able to walk 5–7 hours a day for several days in a row, on steep and uneven trails. No climbing skills are needed, but this is a demanding trek, and the altitude makes everything harder. Start training at least 2 months before.

Is this trek safe for people over 50?

Many people in their 50s and 60s complete it, but please get a full medical check-up and your doctor's approval first. The two acclimatisation days are built in, and your guide will turn back with you if your health requires it.

Are the Lukla flights included?

No. The Kathmandu–Lukla return flights (and the road transfer to Ramechhap in peak season) are quoted separately because fares change by season. We book them together with the trek.

Will we get vegetarian food on the trek?

Yes. Dal-bhat (rice, lentils and vegetable curry) is the staple on the trail and usually comes with free refills. Pasta, noodles, potatoes, eggs and pancakes are also available everywhere.

What is included in the meals?

Breakfast and dinner are included every day. Lunch on the trail, snacks, hot drinks between meals and drinking water are paid at the teahouses; budget about ₹1,500–2,500 per person per day, more at higher villages.
