Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive Guwahati · Drive to Shillong via Umiam Lake — Our driver meets you at Guwahati airport and drives you about 120 km to Shillong (3–3.5 hours), stopping at the Umiam Lake viewpoint on the way. Check in and spend the evening at Police Bazaar, Shillong's main market. Please arrive in Guwahati by about 1 pm, because it gets dark early in the Northeast (around 5 pm in winter).
Dawki and the Umngot river · Mawlynnong and Riwai root bridge — Leave Shillong at about 7 am after breakfast and drive about 82 km to Dawki on the Bangladesh border (2.5–3 hours). Take a boat on the Umngot river, whose water is clearest from November to April (boats are paid locally, roughly ₹800–1,500 per boat). Drive on to Mawlynnong, known for its clean lanes and bamboo dustbins, and walk to the single living root bridge at nearby Riwai. Return to…
Shillong to Cherrapunji · Waterfalls and Mawsmai cave — After breakfast, drive about 55 km to Cherrapunji (Sohra), about 2 hours, stopping at Elephant Falls just outside Shillong and at the Duwan Sing Syiem viewpoint over the gorges. In Cherrapunji, see Nohkalikai Falls, one of India's tallest plunge waterfalls, walk through the lit Mawsmai limestone cave, and view the Seven Sisters Falls at Mawsmai. Entry tickets at these spots are small and paid…
Double-decker living root bridge trek at Nongriat — After an early breakfast, drive about 12 km to Tyrna village and start walking by 8 am. About 3,500 stone steps lead down through the forest, across two steel suspension bridges, to the double-decker root bridge at Nongriat village (2–3 hours down). Rest, cool off by the natural pools, then climb back up (3–4 hours). A registered local guide is required for this trek, and the bridge entry fee is…
Cherrapunji to Shillong · Laitlum Canyons and Shillong sightseeing — After breakfast, drive back towards Shillong and take the side road to Laitlum Canyons for wide views over the valleys (the walk down to the viewpoint is short but steep). In Shillong, visit the Don Bosco Museum of the Northeast's cultures (closed on Sundays), Ward's Lake and, if it is open to visitors that day, Shillong Peak. The evening is free for shopping at Police Bazaar.
Shillong to Guwahati airport · Departure — After breakfast, check out and drive about 120 km to Guwahati airport (3.5–4 hours, depending on traffic at Jorabat). Please book a flight after 2 pm. Visa & entry
No visa or Inner Line Permit needed for Indian tourists in Meghalaya — carry Aadhaar or another government photo ID for every adult, because hotels register guests with the state tourism department
Good to know
Cherrapunji is one of the wettest places on earth. Carry an umbrella or raincoat in every season, plus a light jacket for evenings, which are cool all year (10–15°C in winter).
The Nongriat trek is about 3,500 steps down and the same back up. It is not suitable for people with knee, heart or breathing problems. Wear shoes with good grip and carry water and snacks.
Dawki's water is clearest in the dry months (roughly November–April) but can turn cloudy after rain or nearby road work. Boating is stopped when the river is high in monsoon.
It gets dark by 4:30–5 pm in winter, and hill roads are not driven late. Days start early on this trip.
Vegetarian food is available in Shillong and in hotels, but options are fewer in villages like Mawlynnong and Nongriat. Carry dry snacks, and tell us if you need pure vegetarian meals.
Mobile signal is patchy around Nongriat and Dawki. ATMs are in Shillong and Sohra only, so carry cash for boats, guides and entry fees.
Questions travellers ask
Do we need a permit to visit Meghalaya?
No. Indian tourists do not need an Inner Line Permit for Meghalaya. Carry a photo ID for every adult, because hotels register all guests.
Can senior citizens or children do this trip?
Yes, except the Nongriat trek, which needs good fitness. Seniors and small children can see the single root bridge at Riwai (a short walk) and spend Day 4 at the hotel or nearby sights.
Is Dawki boating included?
No. Boats are hired at the river from the local association. The price is per boat, usually ₹800–1,500, and changes by season.
Will we get vegetarian food?
Yes, in Shillong and at the hotels. Local Khasi food is mostly meat-based, so vegetarian choices are limited in small villages. We can request vegetarian packed lunches for the long days.
Does the price include flights?
No. The trip starts and ends at Guwahati airport. We can book flights from Vijayawada or Hyderabad (usually with one stop) and send a quote with and without flights.
