Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive Colombo · Drive to Kandy — Our chauffeur-guide meets you at Bandaranaike International Airport and drives you to Kandy (about 110 km, 3–3.5 hours). If time allows, you can stop at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage on the way (optional, entry paid locally; the elephants go to the river for bathing at set times). Check in at your Kandy hotel and rest. In the evening, take a walk around Kandy Lake.
Kandy · Peradeniya Gardens · Temple of the Tooth — After breakfast, visit the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, about 20 minutes from town, known for its orchid house, giant Java fig tree and avenue of royal palms (allow 1.5–2 hours). Stop at a gem museum and a batik workshop on the way back; looking is free and buying is up to you. In the evening, attend the puja at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (around 6:30 pm). An optional Kandyan…
Kandy to Bentota · Afternoon on the beach — After breakfast, drive from the hills to the south-west coast (about 160 km, 4–4.5 hours, using the expressway around Colombo). Check in at your beach hotel in Bentota and spend the afternoon by the sea or the pool. Swim only in the areas the hotel marks as safe, because currents can be strong.
Bentota · Turtle hatchery · Madu River (optional) — A slow beach day. In the morning, visit a sea turtle hatchery at Kosgoda, about 20 minutes away, where eggs are protected and hatchlings released into the sea (small entry fee paid locally). In the afternoon, you can take an optional boat safari on the Madu River (about 2 hours) through mangroves and past small islands, including a cinnamon island and a temple island. Water sports such as jet…
Bentota to Mirissa via Galle Fort — Drive south along the coast to Galle (about 60 km, 1.5 hours) and walk through Galle Fort for 2–3 hours: the ramparts, the lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church and the old streets of shops and cafés. Continue along the coast road to Mirissa (about 40 km, 1 hour), stopping at Koggala to see the stilt fishermen; they usually ask for a small tip for photos. Check in at Mirissa in the late afternoon.
Mirissa · Beach day or whale watching — A free day in Mirissa. From December to April, you can join an optional early-morning whale-watching boat trip (about 4–5 hours, leaving around 6:30 am; blue whales and dolphins are often seen but not guaranteed, and the sea can be rough). Otherwise, relax on the beach, walk up to Coconut Tree Hill for the view, or climb Parrot Rock at low tide. Mirissa has many seafood restaurants; vegetarian…
Mirissa to Colombo airport · Departure — Breakfast and check-out. Drive to Bandaranaike International Airport on the Southern Expressway (about 190 km, 3–3.5 hours). Leave Mirissa at least 6–6.5 hours before your international flight to allow for traffic around Colombo.

Visa & entry
Indian passport holders currently get a free 30-day tourist ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) for Sri Lanka. Apply online on the official site eta.gov.lk before travel (approval usually comes by email within 1–2 days); a visa on arrival at Colombo airport is also possible, but the queue is longer. Carry a passport valid for at least 6 months from arrival, your return ticket and hotel details. Sri Lanka renews its free-visa scheme from time to time, so we confirm the current rule when you book.
Good to know
The south-west coast is best from November to April. From May to October the sea is rough, red flags go up on many beaches and whale-watching boats do not run from Mirissa.
Swim only where lifeguards or your hotel say it is safe. Rip currents are common on Sri Lanka's south coast.
Temples require shoulders and knees to be covered, and shoes removed. Do not pose with your back to a Buddha statue for photos.
The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). Indian rupees are not accepted in shops. Cards work in hotels and larger shops; carry LKR cash for tickets, boat trips and tips.
Whale-watching trips can cause seasickness. Take a tablet before boarding and eat a light breakfast.
Gem shops in Kandy and along the coast are part of many tours. Buy only with a proper certificate and receipt, and never feel obliged.
Questions travellers ask
Is the beach safe for children?
Bentota has calmer stretches near the river mouth and most hotels have pools, which are better for small children. On the open beach, children should swim only with an adult and only in flagged safe areas.
Is whale watching included?
No, it is optional and runs only from about December to April. We can book a reliable boat for you; the trip leaves early in the morning and takes 4–5 hours.
Will we get vegetarian food?
Yes. Hotel breakfasts have vegetarian options, Sri Lankan rice and curry includes several vegetable curries and dal, and Kandy has Indian restaurants. Beach towns have fewer pure-vegetarian places, but every restaurant serves vegetarian dishes.
Do Indians need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Indians currently get a free 30-day tourist ETA. Apply online at eta.gov.lk before you fly; we can help you fill it in.
Are flights included?
No. The package starts and ends at Colombo airport. There are direct flights from Hyderabad and Chennai, and we can quote flights from your city separately.
