Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive Haridwar · Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri — Our driver meets you at Haridwar railway station (Dehradun airport is about 35 km away) and takes you to the hotel. Before you leave home, you must have your Char Dham registration (yatra letter with QR code); if you have not registered online, we help you register at the counters in Haridwar today. In the evening, attend the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri. Go to bed early, because the yatra starts…
Haridwar to Barkot — After an early breakfast, drive about 210 km to Barkot via Dehradun and Mussoorie (7–8 hours on hill roads), with a short stop at Kempty Falls if time allows. Lunch is on the way at your own cost. Check in at Barkot in the evening and rest for the Yamunotri trek.
Yamunotri darshan · Trek from Janki Chatti — Leave very early and drive about 45 km to Janki Chatti (about 2 hours). From there, trek about 6 km on a paved, steep path to Yamunotri temple (3–4 hours up for most people), or hire a pony, palki or pithu at your own cost. At the temple, pilgrims cook rice and potatoes in the Surya Kund hot spring as prasad and pray at the Divya Shila before darshan. Trek back down to Janki Chatti and return to…
Barkot to Uttarkashi · Kashi Vishwanath Temple — After breakfast, drive about 100 km to Uttarkashi along the Yamuna and then the Bhagirathi valley (about 4 hours). Check in, rest after yesterday's trek, and visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the Shakti Temple in the evening. This lighter day helps your body adjust before Gangotri.
Gangotri darshan · Return to Uttarkashi — Leave early and drive about 100 km to Gangotri (3.5–4 hours each way), passing the Gangnani hot springs and the Harsil valley. Gangotri temple is a short walk from the parking area, so no trek is needed. After darshan and time at the Bhagirathi ghats, drive back to Uttarkashi by evening.
Uttarkashi to Guptkashi — This is the longest drive of the yatra: about 220 km via Chamba, Tehri and Srinagar (Garhwal) to Guptkashi, taking 8–9 hours with stops. You see the Tehri Dam reservoir on the way. Check in at Guptkashi in the evening, keep a small bag ready for tomorrow's Kedarnath trek and night stay, and sleep early.
Kedarnath · Trek from Gaurikund — Leave around 4–5 am and drive about 30 km to Sonprayag (about 1 hour), where vehicles are parked. Take the local shared jeep to Gaurikund (about 5 km), then trek about 16–18 km to Kedarnath (6–9 hours depending on fitness). Ponies, palkis and pithus are available at your own cost. If you choose the helicopter instead, you fly from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi with a ticket booked in advance. Attend…
Kedarnath darshan · Trek down to Guptkashi — Join the darshan queue early in the morning; queues can take several hours in peak season. If you have the energy, the Bhairavnath temple is a steep 1 km walk above the town. Trek back down to Gaurikund (5–7 hours), take the shared jeep to Sonprayag and drive to Guptkashi for the night.
Guptkashi to Badrinath — After breakfast, drive about 200 km to Badrinath via Ukhimath, Chopta, Chamoli and Joshimath (8–9 hours on mountain roads). Check in, bathe at Tapt Kund (hot spring) and attend the evening darshan or aarti at Badrinath temple if time allows.
Badrinath darshan · Mana village · Drive to Rudraprayag — Have darshan at Badrinath temple early in the morning. Then visit Mana village, about 3 km away near the India–Tibet border, to see Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa and Bhim Pul over the Saraswati river. Around midday, drive about 160 km to Rudraprayag via Joshimath and Karnaprayag (6–7 hours), arriving in the evening.
Rudraprayag to Haridwar via Devprayag · Departure — After breakfast, drive about 165 km to Haridwar (5–6 hours), stopping at Devprayag, where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi meet to become the Ganga. If time allows, there is a short photo stop at Rishikesh. We drop you at Haridwar railway station or Dehradun airport by late afternoon or evening. Please book onward travel for after 7 pm, because landslides can delay hill roads.

Visa & entry
No visa needed — Char Dham registration (free) with Aadhaar or another government photo ID is mandatory for every pilgrim
Good to know
Registration is mandatory and free for every pilgrim, children included. Register online at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in or through the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app before travel, then carry the yatra letter with its QR code on your phone and on paper, along with your photo ID. Offline counters in Haridwar and Rishikesh get very crowded in peak season.
Health and safety: Kedarnath is at about 3,583 m, and Yamunotri, Gangotri and Badrinath are all above 3,000 m. Air is thinner and nights are cold even in summer. The Uttarakhand health department advises a medical check-up 2–3 weeks before the yatra, especially for senior citizens and anyone with heart, blood pressure, diabetes or breathing problems. Please consult your doctor before booking and carry your prescriptions and medicines for the full trip.
On the route, walk slowly, drink at least 2 litres of water a day, do not trek on an empty stomach and avoid alcohol and smoking. If you feel breathless, dizzy, have chest pain or a severe headache, stop and go to the nearest medical relief post. The emergency numbers are 104 and 108. Our team will change the plan for your safety without hesitation.
Pack layers for 0–15°C, including a warm jacket, cap, gloves, a raincoat or poncho, comfortable walking shoes with grip and a small torch. Keep a light day bag for the Kedarnath night stay.
Mountain roads can close because of landslides or weather, especially in monsoon. Darshan order or overnight stops may change at short notice, and extra costs from such delays are not included.
Mobile signal is weak beyond Uttarkashi and Guptkashi; BSNL and Jio usually work best. Carry enough cash, because ATMs near the temples are few and often out of service.
Questions travellers ask
Should we trek to Kedarnath or take the helicopter?
The trek is about 16–18 km one way from Gaurikund and climbs about 1,600 m. Fit adults usually take 6–9 hours up, and ponies or palkis are available at extra cost. The helicopter flies from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi in about 10 minutes. Tickets are sold only on the official IRCTC HeliYatra portal (heliyatra.irctc.co.in) and require your Char Dham registration number. Recent round-trip fares have been around ₹8,700–9,500 per person. Seats sell out fast, and flights are often delayed or cancelled in bad weather, so keep the trek or a pony as a backup. Do not pay any agent or website that claims to sell helicopter tickets outside the IRCTC portal.
Is Char Dham registration mandatory? Who does it?
Yes. Every pilgrim must register on the Uttarakhand government portal or app, and registration is free. We can help you fill it in, but each pilgrim's details and photo ID must be correct. Carry the QR-coded yatra letter, because it is checked at several points.
Can senior citizens do this yatra?
Many senior citizens complete it every year, but please get a medical check-up and your doctor's approval first. Gangotri and Badrinath are close to the road. Yamunotri and Kedarnath need a trek, a pony, a palki or (for Kedarnath) a helicopter. People with serious heart or lung conditions should take medical advice before deciding.
When are the temples open?
The temples usually open around late April or May (Akshaya Tritiya) and close for winter around Diwali–Bhai Dooj in October or November. Exact dates are announced each year by the temple committees. The best months are May–June and mid-September to October; July–August has the highest landslide risk.
Why does the tour start in Haridwar and not Delhi?
Delhi to Haridwar is about 220 km, or 5–6 hours by road, so starting from Delhi would need an extra day. Haridwar is well connected by overnight trains and the Vande Bharat from Delhi, and Dehradun airport is about 35 km away. We can arrange Delhi pick-up and drop at extra cost.
