Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive Hanoi · Evening in the Old Quarter — Our representative meets you at Noi Bai International Airport after immigration. The drive to your hotel near the Old Quarter takes about 45 minutes. Check-in is usually from 2 pm. In the evening, walk around Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter before dinner. A water puppet show (about 50 minutes) is an optional extra.
Hanoi city tour — After breakfast, visit Ba Dinh Square and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex, including Ho Chi Minh's stilt house and the One Pillar Pagoda. The mausoleum opens only in the morning, is closed on Mondays and Fridays and closes for maintenance for a period each year, so on those days you see the outside only. Continue to the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first university, then Ngoc Son Temple on…
Drive to Sapa · Cat Cat village — Leave Hanoi at about 7 am for the drive of about 5–5.5 hours on the Hanoi–Lao Cai expressway and the mountain road up to Sapa, at about 1,500 m, with a lunch stop on the way (at your own cost). After check-in, walk down to Cat Cat village, a Black Hmong village with a waterfall and weaving workshops; the path is about 2 km of steps down, and you can take a taxi back up. The evening is cool, even…
Muong Hoa valley walk · Lao Chai and Ta Van villages — After breakfast, walk with a local guide through the Muong Hoa valley, past rice terraces to the Hmong village of Lao Chai and the Giay village of Ta Van. The walk is about 10–12 km and 3–4 hours, mostly downhill on dirt paths that get muddy after rain; wear trekking shoes. Your vehicle picks you up at Ta Van for the return to Sapa. The rice terraces are green from June to August and golden from…
Sapa market · Return to Hanoi — After breakfast, visit the Sapa town market and the stone church, then drive about 5–5.5 hours back to Hanoi, arriving late afternoon. Collect your stored luggage and repack for the cruise. Dinner is in Hanoi.
Ha Long Bay overnight cruise — Leave Hanoi at about 8 am for the drive of about 2.5 hours to the harbour. Board around noon and have lunch as the boat sails among the limestone islands. In the afternoon, visit one of the bay's large caves, such as Sung Sot (about 100 steps up), and kayak or take a bamboo boat through a lagoon, depending on the cruise route. Watch the sunset from the deck, then join the cooking demonstration…
Morning on the bay · Fly to Hue — Join sunrise tai chi on deck, have breakfast and an early-morning visit if the route allows, then brunch on board before you disembark at about 10:30–11 am. Drive about 2.5 hours to Noi Bai airport for the evening flight of about 1 hour 10 minutes to Hue, a short drive from the airport to the hotel. Dinner is in Hue.
Hue Imperial City · Hai Van Pass to Hoi An — After breakfast, tour the Imperial City (Dai Noi), the walled palace of the Nguyen emperors, then visit Thien Mu Pagoda on the Perfume River and the hillside Tomb of Khai Dinh, which has about 120 steps. After lunch (at your own cost), drive about 3 hours south over the Hai Van Pass, with a photo stop at the top for views of the coast and Da Nang, to reach Hoi An by evening.
Hoi An Ancient Town · Lanterns by the river — The morning is free for An Bang beach (about 4 km), the tailors or an optional basket-boat ride in the Cam Thanh coconut forest. In the late afternoon, take a guided walk through the Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Japanese Covered Bridge, an old merchant's house and a Chinese assembly hall, all covered by the Ancient Town ticket. Stay on as the lanterns come on along the Thu Bon…
Marble Mountains · Fly to Ho Chi Minh City · City tour — Check out after breakfast and stop at the Marble Mountains on the way to Da Nang airport; steps lead to caves and pagodas, and an elevator covers the first part at extra cost. Fly about 1 hour 25 minutes to Ho Chi Minh City. In the afternoon, visit the War Remnants Museum, the Central Post Office and the outside of Notre-Dame Cathedral, which has been under long-term restoration, and finish at…
Cu Chi tunnels · Free afternoon — After breakfast, drive about 1.5–2 hours to the Cu Chi tunnels at Ben Dinh. The guide shows the hidden entrances and traps, and you can crawl through a short section widened for visitors; it is cramped, so skip it if you are uncomfortable in tight spaces. Return to the city by early afternoon. The rest of the day is free for shopping or a Saigon River cruise (optional). A Mekong Delta day trip…
Departure from Ho Chi Minh City — Check out by 12 noon, which is the usual hotel checkout time. Tan Son Nhat International Airport is about 30–60 minutes from the city centre depending on traffic. Plan to reach the airport 3 hours before your international flight.

Visa & entry
Indian passport holders need a visa for Vietnam. The easiest option is the e-visa, applied for online only on the official portal evisa.gov.vn. It costs USD 25 for single entry or USD 50 for multiple entry, is valid for up to 90 days, and usually takes 3–5 working days, longer in peak periods. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from arrival with 2 blank pages, and the name, passport number and date of birth on the e-visa must exactly match your passport. Print the approved e-visa and carry it with your return ticket and hotel bookings. Avoid unofficial look-alike websites that charge extra.
Good to know
Pack for three climates: warm layers for Sapa (cold at night for much of the year and near freezing in December–February), light cotton for Hoi An and Saigon, and a rain jacket for central Vietnam.
The Sapa village walk is about 3–4 hours on uneven, sometimes muddy paths. Wear trekking shoes with good grip. Seniors can do a shorter walk with the vehicle following.
Currency is the Vietnamese dong (VND). Carry US dollars and exchange them in Vietnam, because Indian rupees are not exchanged. Markets in Sapa and Hoi An prefer cash.
Vegetarian food is easy to find if you look for 'chay' (vegetarian) restaurants. Hanoi, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City have Indian restaurants. Tell us at booking if you need vegetarian or Jain dinners and cruise meals.
Cover shoulders and knees at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Hue's palace and tombs, and pagodas.
Ha Long Bay sailings can be cancelled by the authorities in storms, mostly from June to October. The cruise operator then changes the route or offers a refund or new date under its policy.
Questions travellers ask
Are the flights inside Vietnam included?
No. The two domestic flights, Hanoi to Hue and Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City, are quoted separately with your international flights. You fly into Hanoi and home from Ho Chi Minh City.
Is vegetarian food available, including on the cruise?
Yes. Dinners are included every day, and we ask each hotel and the cruise to prepare vegetarian or Jain meals when you tell us at booking. Vegetarian 'chay' restaurants are also common across Vietnam.
Is 12 days too tiring for seniors?
It is a full trip with two 5-hour drives to and from Sapa and two flights. Active seniors manage it well at a steady pace. If you prefer a slower trip, we can drop Sapa and add more nights in Hoi An.
Do Indians need a visa for Vietnam?
Yes. Apply for the e-visa online at evisa.gov.vn, which costs USD 25 for single entry and usually takes 3–5 working days. We can help you fill in the form correctly.
What does the complimentary travel insurance cover?
It is basic travel medical cover for the trip. We share the policy details, age limits and what is covered when you book, and you can upgrade it if you need higher cover.
